Promoting Mount Rainier’s Arts and Business Community

Me at the Joe's Holiday Craft Fair 2025

Living here in Mount Rainier, I feel the looming presence of DC on one side and Hyattsville on the other, watching traffic speed through town from one to the other. One reason I chose this as my home was the vibrant art community at the entrance of the Gateway Arts District (as well as our beautiful trees and rolling hills). We should drive awareness of the historic sites in Mt Rainier, our talented artists, our growing food destinations (Pennyroyal and Era!) and entice new businesses to open up in some of the empty shopfronts in town to encourage more business and visits from other towns around us.

  • Support and promote our arts community, including more open studio events, artist events, heightened visibility of Mount Rainier in the local arts community

  • Attract visitors to stay and explore, rather than just passing through from DC to Hyattsville

  • Leverage and promote our location as the entrance to the Rte 1 Corridor and the Gateway Arts District

  • Address vacant storefronts and empty lots in Mount Rainer

  • Encourage a diverse range of businesses in the city

  • Community entrepreneurship programming

Civic and Community Engagement

As a regular voter and very vocal advocate for citizen engagement, I believe in increasing and strengthening our city’s civic engagement. As City Council Member for Ward 2, I would have regular, in person, resident engagement meetings to hear from and speak with you. I would explore ways to engage with the teens and young adults of our town, in partnership with the board of elections, when possible, to encourage their engagement at the local level in the city. I would also like to see how I could help support our fellow Mounties who have been impacted by the drastic measures taking place at the Federal Government level, especially those that have lost their jobs or businesses.

  • Increase resident participation in government through Ward Resident Meetings and enhanced information sharing

  • Expand activities for adults and teens

  • Promote the concept that "Politics begins at home"

  • Foster healthy communities - green spaces, health information, self sufficiency

  • Support our residents impacted by Federal Agency issues

Community Safety and Security

I am concerned about traffic safety with so many cars passing through town at high speeds, blowing through stop signs, and posing a risk for our residents and their children. We hear about issues at the traffic circle and bus stops which we should seek solutions to with local businesses and our police force. We touch DC along one long border of town, raising concerns about the proximity to the District and its potential impacts to our residents and neighbors.

  • Address street safety concerns: speeding, through traffic, traffic circle problems

  • Safeguard our community from potential issues arising from our proximity to DC and federal entities

  • Address crime and safety around the city
